7th Pay Commission: The government has hiked the disability, war injury pension, special family pension and liberalised family pension to minimum Rs 18,000 per month for Defence Forces and family pensioners. The increase in pension is made effective from January 1, 2016. According to the data available on Principal Controller of Defence Accounts (Pensions) website, the minimum pension in these categories was Rs 7000 per month.

Family members of a defence officer are eligible for Special Family Pension if the personnel dies whether during service or after retirement is caused due to certain circumstances. The details of the rules, Click HERE.

“With approval from Smt @nsitharaman, it has been decided that the disability/war injury pension, special family pension and liberalised family pension shall be minimum Rs 18,000 per month for Defence Forces pensioners/family pensioners, with effect from 1/1/2016,” a tweet on Raksha Mantri’s (Defence Minister) official page stated on Thursday.

‏The Principal Controller of Defence Accounts (Pensions) website states “Special Family Pension shall be calculated @ 60% of reckonable emoluments drawn at the time of death of the officer subject to a minimum of Rs. 7000/- p.m. irrespective of whether widow has children or not. There shall be no maximum ceiling on Special Family Pension. Emoluments will comprise pay in pay band, grade pay, MSP, NPA, if any, last drawn by the officer.” This says that the existing minimum pension in these categories is Rs 7000 per month.

7th CPC: Who are eligible for Special Family Pension:
1. Wife (lawfully married before or after retirement) including a judicially separated life, as stated in the website.
2. According to the information available, sons/un-married daughters, widowed, divorced daughters (including those illegitimate and adopted legally) till he/she attains the age of 25 years or up to the date of their marriage, re-marriage whichever is earlier.

3. In case the eligible child is physically or mentally handicapped and unable to earn livelihood, the Special Family Pension would be admissible for life.
4. Mother and father of a defence personnel
5. Brother or sister till he/she attains 25 years of age.

The government has also increased monthly pay of Medical Specialists, Gynaecologists and Radiologists with effect from 24 January 2019.
