Education officers in Indian Navy provide support in imparting education, training and professional development of Naval personnel. Indian Navy’s one of the main peace-time activities is preparing for future missions, which involves continuous training of its personnel. A key determinant for the outcome of any mission is the training imparted to its personnel. The education officers play a major role in training officers and sailors of the Indian Navy. They are responsible for scientific and methodical instructions including theoretical aspects of technical subjects of all Branches of Indian Navy and for the general educational advancement of its personnel.

Education Officers also impart instructions in various Indian Naval Training institues including the Indian Naval Academy (INA) at Ezhimala. They also teach science, technical and service subjects to naval cadets pursuin B.Tech training at INA. They also impart training to officers during their specialisation courses at technical training establishments such as INS Valsura and INSShivaji. Besides that, Education Officers provide coaching and guidance to sailors for their career progress in service, as well as to enhance their resettlement opportunities by facilitating pursuance of various higher education courses. They also conduct various in-service examinations for officers and sailors in online and offline modes at across the country using technology.

The Indian Navy has set up a large number of Naval Reference Libraries onboard Naval ship and various naval bases in order to meet the educational, professional and recreational needs of naval personnel. Education Officers are also responsible for introduction of latest techniques and technologies in these libraries.

These officers also provide meteorology/oceanography services support for maritime operations.

Education Officers in senior ranks are also posted as Principals and Vice Principals to various Sainik Schools across India.

Candidates are inducted as officers in the rank of Sub Lieutenant and undergo Naval Orientation Course at the Indian Naval Academy, Ezhimala, followed by professional training at various Naval Training Establishment/Units/Ships.

Some of the Education Officers are deputed for M.Tech courses in various IITs/NITs. Education Officers also undergo a range of specialisation courses, including Anti-Submarine Warfare, Naval Communication, Gunnery, Hydrography, Navigation & Direction, Meteorology and oceanography

A second class Master’s degree of a recognized university in Physics or Mathematics. Candidates possessing Master’s degree in physics should have studies Mathematics at least at the subsidiary level at the degree standard and those possessing master’s degree in Mathematics should have studied Physics at least at the subsidiary level at degree standard.


A second class Master’s degree of a recognized university in Chemistry or English. Candidates possessing Master’s degree in Chemistry should have studied Physics at least at the subsidiary level at the degreestandard and those possessing Master’s degree in English should have studied Physics or Mathematics up to the intermediate or equivalent standard.


A degree in any of the following disciplines:-

Mechanical Engineering
Electrical Engineering
Engineering in Computer Science/Technology

A second class Master’s degree of a recognized university in computer application or computer science. Candidate should have studied either Physics or Mathematics at their graduation level.


A post graduate degree of a recognized university in Humanities(Economics/History/ Political Science).
