The government has launched various fellowship schemes to improve the quality of research at higher educational institutions and attract young researchers. The schemes the government has launched to promote research in higher educational institutions are – Prime Minister’s Research Fellowship, Impacting research Innovation and Technology (IMPRINT), Uchhatar Avishkar Yojana (UAY), Trainee Teacher Scheme, among others.

Prime Minister’s Research Fellowship:
The students selected for the fellowship are provided Rs 70,000 per month for the first two years, Rs 75,000 per month in the third year and Rs 80,000 per month in the fourth and fifth year. The researchers also get an annual research grant of Rs 2 lakh.

Research Parks: The government has approved setting up of research parks at IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Bombay, IIT Hyderabad, IIT Gandhinagar and IISc Banglore.

Uchhatar Avishkar Yojana (UAY): The scheme aims to promote innovation at higher educational institutions which will improve the competitive edge of Indian manufacturing. Students of IITs and other technical institutes may look for these schemes. CLICK HERE 

Smart India Hackathons are being organised every year since 2017 to find out digital solutions to various problems faced by the people. This provides hands on working and research opportunity to engineering students.

Trainee Teacher Scheme: To motivate and sponsor best graduate engineers for part-time M.Tech and Ph.D. programmes, a Trainee Teacher Scheme had been initiated at NITs. Institution’s Innovation Council (IIC) at 960 Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs) was established for promoting innovation ecosystem on their campuses.

Centre with Potential for Excellence in Particular Areas(CPEPA), Colleges with Potential for Excellence (CPE), Special Assistance Programme (SAP), MID Career Award to Faculty members, UGC – BSR Faculty Fellowship (research after retirement), Dr. S. Radhakrishnan Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Humanities, Emeritus Fellowship, Post-Doctoral Fellowship for SC/ST, Post- Doctoral Fellowship for Women, Junior Research Fellowship (for Ph.D.) and Research Scientist, Research Award are also students may look for.
